Teacher Appreciation Luncheon Gifts

Dear Parents,

Each year in celebration of National Teacher Appreciation Week, the Clinton Central School PTA hosts a luncheon to honor and celebrate our teachers, faculty, and staff. Everyone who is employed by the district, from administrators to crossing guards, is invited to attend and the PTA provides a beautifully catered multi-course lunch buffet. It is one of our favorite events of the year and we always look forward to honoring our wonderful school employees on this day.

One of the highlights of the luncheon is a long-standing tradition of raffling off door prizes. Each person who attends the luncheon is given a ticket upon entering and throughout the meal volunteers draw tickets to select the winners. It is an extremely fun part of the day and we love being able to send our favorite people home with a gift of appreciation.

Now that you know a little about the event, here is where we are asking for your help. The PTA provides all of the food and supplies for the event, but we are in need of door prizes to raffle off. Anything that you can send in will be greatly appreciated and the more gifts we receive, the more we can raffle off. Some years we have been able to give each guest a gift - that’s about 200 gifts!

This year if you would like to contribute, you have two choices the PTA website has a new link where you can donate directly

https://ccs-appreciation.cheddarup.com/

Or you can send your donation to the Elementary School Office and they will be picked up by one of our volunteers. The date of this year’s luncheon is May 10th and we would need all items by Monday May, 7th. Please be aware that your donation may not go to your child’s teacher, we raffle all donations off so everyone who attends has a chance to go home with a thank you gift.

Listed below are some ideas of what can be sent in, but please feel free to be creative. If it’s easier, you can even send in money and we’ll do the shopping for you!

If you would like more information about this event or if you would like to help out in other ways, please email us at ccsnypta@gmail.com and once again, THANK YOU for your continued support.

Sincerely,

The CCS PTA

Green Team Weekly Messages

Things That Cannot Be Recycled

On March 23, Leah and Ellis Vanderlan told teachers and students about things that cannot be recycled. Some things made of paper that cannot be recycled are: napkins, paper plates, tissue paper, soda containers, and construction paper. Plastic items that cannot be recycled include: styrofoam trays and containers, plastic toys, motor oil bottles, prescription bottles, and clothes hangers. Glass that cannot be recycled includes: broken glass, drinking glasses, ceramics, dishes, mirrors, window glass and light bulbs. All of these items need to be thrown in the garbage. Try to reduce your use of them or reuse them if possible. If you’re not sure if something can be recycled, you can visit www.AmIRecyclable.com to find out.

How to Pack a Zero Waste Lunch

Chloe Golden and Nora Reid presented a message about how to pack a zero waste lunch. A zero waste lunch means that after eating, you don’t have to throw anything away. Try to pack everything in containers that can be reused or recycled. Start with a reusable lunch box. You can also buy different sized containers to pack sandwiches, soups, and snacks. Bring a reusable water bottle or a juice box. Juice boxes can be recycled. Juice pouches have to be thrown in the trash. You can also buy milk at school and recycle the container. Try not to use plastic forks or spoons. Instead, bring forks or spoons that can be washed and used again. Just remember to put them back in your lunchbox and bring them home. Other things that you can bring are a cloth napkin that can be washed and used again, plastic zip bags that can be recycled with the plastic film, and aluminum foil that can also be recycled.

Celebrate Earth Day on April 22!

On April 6, Charlotte Gale and Emma Peto presented a message about Earth Day! Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 in countries all around the world. Earth Day was started 48 years ago on April 22, 1970. A U.S. Senator named Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day to demonstrate support to protect our environment. This year, millions of people will celebrate Earth Day in 193 countries around the world. People will go to rallies, clean up their towns and cities, hold recycling events, and look for other ways to help our environment. This year, Earth Day falls during our spring break. We won’t be in school, but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate. Look for things you can do around your house and community. Start a garden, clean up your yard, look for clothes or toys that can be donated, or find things to recycle.
In school, let’s make the whole month of April about celebrating our Earth.

Elementary Arbor Day Ceremony - Friday, April 20, 10:00 AM
Dear Families,

Our annual Elementary Arbor Day ceremony will take place on the morning of April 20th at 10:00. Once again Hamilton College is donating the tree for us to plant. You are welcome to attend and we encourage you to stay and be a "cheerleader".

This year our ceremony will include a school wide lap around the track to raise money to give to our school's "Green Team". The "Green Team" is made up of students and teachers that generate ideas to make our school more environmentally friendly. This money will be used to buy items to make our school more "green" including purchasing rain barrels and composting bins. If you would like to help your child raise money, please consider sponsoring him/her to "walk a lap for the Green Team." If your child feels comfortable asking other people (grandparents, close family friends, etc.) to sponsor him/her that would be great! The monetary donation is up to you. All children will participate in the walk after our ceremony is complete. The ceremony will take place outside so please make sure your child is prepared for the weather with an umbrella or raincoat.

Please send all donations in an envelope marked "Arbor Day" with your child's name on it to school by Monday, April 30th.

Our ceremony will take place near our playground by the nature trail. We will cross the wooden bridge to our track to complete our lap. We are asking that family members that attend find a spot on the outside of the track to cheer us on! When we complete our lap we will go back into our classrooms.

Thank you for being an active supporter of our school events and for helping to make this ceremony even more special. Your donation will make the world a greener, cleaner place for many generations to come.

Thank you,

The Arbor Day Team

Clinton Student wins Youth Cooking Challenge

Clinton's Olivia Cofano has won first place in the United Way’s Youth Cooking Challenge!

The community had voted and selected two teams as finalists in United Way’s Youth Cooking Challenge underwritten by MVP Health Care. This unique competition began with six contestants being selected and paired with a local chef. Each team was professionally filmed preparing their “signature” dish. The public then had the opportunity to vote for their favorite child and chef team.

The finalists were
  • Olivia Cofano, 11, and Chef Michael Latreille of Michael’s Fine Food and Spirits
  • Jonathan Kornmeyer, 11, and Victor Ramirez of Madison Bistro
The two teams advanced to a “cook-off” finale event broadcasted Live on Facebook on April 10th at Restaurant Equipment Equipment Corp.’s fully equipped test kitchen and went head to head creating two dishes incorporating four surprise ingredients! The surprise ingredients included: flank steak, oatmeal, goat cheese, and strawberry preserves.

“The freshness of working with youth, someone who is 11 years old, brought this competition to a completely different level. When you're competing with kids, while it’s competitive, it’s also just fun”, stated Chef Victor Ramirez while waiting for the judges to choose a winner at the end of the event.

“We as chefs can get caught up in the day to day operations of the restaurant, and this was just so refreshing. It was great to work with the youth and get to know them. I am kind of sad it’s over” added Chef Michael Latreille.

Three judges including Jillian Ducato of Fortus Healthcare Resources/Primary Urgent Care, Sonia Martinez of the Mohawk Valley Latino Association, and Bill Vinci of The Empire Plate, watched each team prepare their two dishes as their mouths watered from the aroma in the kitchen. Each judge was presented with the final dishes to taste and were tasked with choosing the winner of the challenge.

“They both did something special and unique in creating these dishes, they truly were fantastic” commented judge Bill Vinci.

In the end, the judges announced team Olivia Cofano and Chef Michael Latreille as the winner of the event! As the winner was announced, both Olivia and Jonathan showed their sportsmanship in congratulating each other.

“It was a really tough choice, all the dishes were so good!”, stated judge Jillian Ducato.

“We almost couldn’t stop tasting the food long enough to talk among the judges and deliberate!”, added judge Sonia Martinez.

The winner received a grand prize cooking themed basket valued at $250. The runner up received a cooking themed prize basket valued at $150. All contestants received a healthy teen cookbook written by teen winner of Master Chef Junior.

The cooking challenge is a component of United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area’s health initiative with a focus on childhood health and wellness including obesity prevention.

A special thank you to MVP Health Care, our health and wellness partner for this inaugural event.

This event is also made possible thanks to sponsors Capitol Arts Complex, Restaurant Equipment Equipment Corp., Townsquare Media, Primary Urgent Care, CNY Labor Council, Hannaford Supermarkets, MVCC Professional Association, Utica First Insurance Company, and United Way Board of Directors.

You can catch the whole finale event by visitng United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/UnitedWayVGU.
