Clinton Middle School Collects Supplies for Hurricane Victims
By Talia Foley

The Clinton Middle School's Family and Consumer Science classes and student council have collected school supplies to send to victims of Hurricane Harvey. Mrs. Grimm, who teaches Family and Consumer Science, said that she got Clinton Middle School involved in collecting supplies when she saw that Facebook was matching classrooms in hurricane affected areas with classrooms in other areas. Classrooms collect supplies for the hurricane victims. Her classroom was matched with a sixth grade class, while the student council was matched with a seventh grade class in a different school. The sixth grade class that Mrs. Grimm's classroom was matched with was fortunate enough to attend a school that sustained only minor damage during the hurricane. Despite their good luck, many of the students have no home to return to and are living in shelters. The situation is made worse by the fact that the area was already financially challenged.

Clinton Middle School received a list of the supplies that the schools needed. The idea was to put together sets of supplies for the students in each classroom. The Family and Consumer Science class was hoping to collect enough supplies for one classroom, which would be about 30 complete sets of everything on the supply list. Mrs. Grimm stated that they had collected "overwhelmingly more" than she had expected. They ended up with enough supplies for 50 sets. A supply list consisted of 1 composition book, 1 pack of yellow highlighters, 6 Elmer's glue sticks, and 4 pocket folders with prongs.

The Family and Consumer Science classes were promised that that the class that collected the most items would receive an ice cream party, but students' desire to donate supplies seemed to go far beyond the promise of a reward. Mrs. Grimm stated that while many of them cannot truly imagine what it would be like to go through what the other students are going through, Clinton students seemed like they personally cared about helping hurricane victims. They feel a strong sense of empathy. A student said both she and her friend were very excited about the opportunity to help others in such desperate need.

This enthusiasm was reflected in the amount of supplies the students collected. Between the Family and Consumer Science classes and student council, the Middle School collected 47 composition notebooks, 221 folders, 41 sets of colored pencils, 12 boxes of crayons, 15 packs of notecards, 116 highlighters, 122 dry erase markers, 3 rulers, 4 pencil cases, 1 calculator, 1 pencil sharpener, 50 pencil toppers, 7 sets of markers, 115 glue stickes, 20 packs of number two pencils, and 18 binders. All of these supplies made a total of almost 800 items! Clinton School is shipping the supplies to the classrooms using the United States Postal Service.

This was a project that was good for everyone involved. Victims of Hurricane Harvey, who would have had a difficult time obtaining the supplies they need for the school year, will now have access to them. The students at Clinton Middle School had the opportunity to practice good citizenship by being a helpful and active part of their nationwide community.

Ned's Kindness Adventure
Ned's Kindness Adventure is visiting Clinton Elementary School on Thursday November 16th at 9:30 am. Students will go on a journey to Africa with storytelling, music, interactive videos, magical illusions and audience participation. Our school gets the assembly for free because it will be hosting a kindness sale. Hand-crafted items will be displayed after the assembly and during parent/teacher conferences later that day. Families can place orders by sending in cash payment with the completed form.

Each item purchased helps keep kindness going by sending the Kindness Adventure assembly to other schools for free and providing income to the artisans in Kenya. For more information, check out the Ned's Kindness Adventure website: www.kindnessadventure.com. Thank you to the Clinton Elementary Character Education Team for bringing this event to our school!

Clinton Central School Plastic Film Recycling Challenge
Clinton Central School
Plastic Film Recycling Challenge

Clinton Central School is taking part in a Plastic Film Recycling Challenge to celebrate American Recycles Day (November 15th). For this Challenge, students will be asked to collect plastic film (i.e. grocery bags, bread bags, Ziploc bags and more) which can only be recycled through take-back programs offered by grocery stores and retailers in NYS.

The goal of this Challenge is to educate the community on proper recycling of plastic grocery bags and other plastic film items, which cannot be recycled through regular curbside recycling programs. This initiative focuses on collecting clean, dry plastic film in order to keep it out of our region's landfill.

Clinton is competing against other schools in Oneida and Herkimer Counties to collect the most plastic film per capita. We will be collecting plastic film from November 15th - December 22nd.

Please begin saving the items listed below and sending them to school with students for proper recycling!

Acceptable Items (must be CLEAN and DRY):
  • Grocery bags
  • Bread bags
  • Case overwrap
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Newspaper sleeves
  • Ice bags
  • Wood pellet bags
  • Ziploc & other reclosable bags
  • Produce bags
  • Bubble wrap
  • Salt bags
  • Cereal bags
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Meredith Callaghan (mcallaghan@ccs.edu) or Denise Toia-Kramer (dtoiakramer@ccs.edu)

Thank you in advance for helping our students keep plastic film out of the landfill!

Girls Saturday Morning Basketball

Cross Country States
Junior Eva Borton and Freshman Taylor Harvey finished 2nd and 5th respectively at the NYSPHSAA Class C State Championships Saturday 11/11/17 at Wayne HS in Rochester.

The Section III team won the Girls Class C State Title with both CCS runners scoring valuable points towards the Section III team win.

Section III Girls also won the class A & Class D titles for 3 out of 4 State Championships, making Section III by far the most competitive section in the state.

Syracuse CBA (who kept Clinton girls from going to states as a team for the second straight year) won the girls State class C school team title.

Senior Andrew Ford ran a fantastic race (out-kicking 9 runners in the last mile) to finish 19th in class C and to make the podium as an individual.

The NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships award 4 types of honors:

1) The top 20 individual runners in each class (A, B, C & D) are recognized and awarded medals on the awards podium. All 3 CCS runners earned this honor!

2) The individual winning school team is crowned in each class (among the pool of sectional over-all class winning teams like CBA).

3) Each section's top 12 individuals in each class (regardless of their school affiliations) are compared to decide a State "Sectional team" Champion. Borton & Harvey both contributed to this honor & distinction.

4) The top over-all runners on the whole day (regardless of class) move on to the NYS Federation Championships next week at Bowdoin Park. Again, Borton & Harvey qualified for this level of competition (which pits the NYSPHSAA's top runners against the NY City public schools, private schools and Catholic schools next week).

The athletes did an outstanding job overcoming the brutal winter conditions and weather to earn such honors.
